Replan combines public transit service planning in the browser (Replan Transit) with an agent-based transport simulation (Replan SIM) on one digital twin of the region.
This page places Replan next to the usual tools of transport planning. What Replan does not do is listed here too.
| Replan Transit | GIS and spreadsheets | Web network planning | Scheduling and dispatch systems | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Focus | Service planning with vehicle blocks, cost and accessibility | Route in GIS, timetable and cost in spreadsheets | Network and route sketches | Vehicle blocks, duties and rosters in operations |
| Lines and timetable | In one tool, with interval windows, matrix and stringline views | In separate files | Yes | Timetable as input |
| Vehicle blocks and shifts | From the timetable, with driver and fleet requirement | By hand | Partly, often as an add-on | Core feature, with optimisation |
| Operating cost | Parametric cost model per line, day and year | A separate spreadsheet per variant | Cost estimate | KPIs per scenario |
| Demand | Agent-based with Replan SIM, every person with a daily plan | External traffic model | Mostly population in the catchment | Outside the focus |
| Real-time operations | No | No | No | Often yes |
Typical tool types, not single products. Individual products differ.
| Macroscopic model | Microsimulation | Replan SIM | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model level | Macroscopic | Microscopic | Agent-based, mesoscopic traffic flow |
| Basic unit | Zones, matrices | Vehicles, pedestrians | People with a daily plan |
| Area | City, region, country | Junctions, corridors | City to region |
| Typical question | Network load, forecast | Capacity, traffic signals | How do people react to a measure? |
Replan SIM is built on MATSim (TU Berlin, ETH Zürich). Existing traffic models can be taken over where they fit.
You plan lines and timetables and need vehicles, cost and accessibility per variant: Replan Transit. Transit service planning
You need effects by income, age, district and time of day, for fares, zones or on-demand: Replan SIM, also next to a macroscopic model.
You optimise driver rosters and run daily operations: a scheduling and dispatch system.
You plan junctions and traffic signals in detail: a microsimulation.
Replan SIM calculates traffic flow mesoscopically. It does not model single junctions or signal programmes.
Replan plans and simulates. Dispatching in live operations and control centre technology are outside its scope.
Replan builds shifts and driver requirement for planning. Duty rosters over several weeks are outside its scope.
As soon as every variant needs vehicles, shifts, cost and accessibility. Replan Transit calculates these figures with every change, in one tool.
That depends on the question. A macroscopic model calculates with zones and matrices. Replan SIM simulates every person with a daily plan and shows effects by group and time of day. Many teams use both, and existing models can be taken over.
No. Replan SIM calculates traffic flow mesoscopically. For junctions and traffic signals, a microsimulation is the right tool.
On MATSim, an open simulation framework from TU Berlin and ETH Zürich. The method is peer-reviewed in Transportation Research Record 2025. MATSim explained in one minute →
Replan builds shifts and driver requirement for planning. Rosters over several weeks and dispatching in operations are done by specialised systems.
