Why it matters
A new line is drawn and its stops placed. The planner sets 05:30–23:30 every 8 minutes; the platform writes the timetable, turns it into trips and chains the trips into vehicle blocks — one row per vehicle — giving 18 vehicles, vehicle-hours, vehicle-km and deadheading. Change the headway to 6 minutes and everything is rebuilt: 23 vehicles and the operating cost that goes with them.
Most of what a transit planner does before a model run — drawing, scheduling, checking reach and cost — is where time is lost between the big model iterations. Seeing that step on a map, with the numbers following the sketch, is what makes the workflow believable.
